"If Bill de Blasio's plan was to destroy real educational opportunity for New York City's 1.1 million students, he has earned an A-plus. I understand that Bronx Science, Stuyvesant and other specialized high schools represent a key to a better life for countless low-income and immigrant families who came to this country to earn their piece of the American Dream through old-fashioned hard work. New York needs more of these specialized secondary schools so that gifted students are able to realize their full potential, no matter their background. The mayor's action smacks of racial profiling and is the latest example of a career politician attempting to curry favor with entrenched special interests rather than do something that will actually improve the dismal performance of New York's public schools in 2018 and beyond."
