Staten Island, NY -- Congressman Dan Donovan and U.S. Senate candidate Chele Farley today held a joint press conference affirming their commitment to advancing Staten Island’s two key infrastructure projects -- North Shore Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and West Shore Light Rail -- in the next Congress, calling them essential to mitigating traffic and improving transportation options for the residents of Staten Island.
Congressman Donovan has long been an advocate for these projects and personally outlined his case to the chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation with a three-pronged strategy to obtain funding for each project: including language to a mandated committee report that acknowledges light rail and BRT would help alleviate the national transportation crisis; adding language to the transportation appropriations bill text that mandated at least some of the transportation infrastructure money be spent on high-population areas with extreme commute times; and finally, increasing funding for the Urbanized Area Formula Grant and the Bus and Bus Facilities Grant that could be applied toward the two projects.
“I am fighting hard to finally make these projects a reality and we have a clear plan to get it done, but having a real partner in the Senate like Chele Farley to help advocate for Staten Island will go a long way,” said Congressman Donovan. “As an engineer, Chele has a firsthand understanding of infrastructure and transportation issues. She knows how important relieving our traffic crisis is to Staten Island, and will fight with me to make sure we get our fair share of funding.”
“Staten Islanders are fortunate to have a leader like Dan Donovan fighting for them in Washington,” said candidate for U.S. Senate Chele Farley. “As a longtime City resident, I know Staten Island has been getting short shrift for years when it comes to transportation options, and I vow to finally change that in Congress. Staten Islanders deserve a Senator who is focused on their issues rather than running for President. I fully support these projects and will work closely with Dan and the White House to make them a top priority.”
Chele Farley is an outsider with over 25 years of experience in the private sector. She is the Republican, Conservative and Reform Party candidate for U.S. Senate. Farley lives in New York City with her husband Richard and their three sons. For more information about U.S. Senate candidate Chele Farley, please visit www.CheleFarleyforSenate.com.
