Farley Statement on MTA Fare Hikes

For Immediate Release: July 26, 2018

"It is incomprehensible that the MTA, already losing ridership, is planning not one but two fare hikes on straphangers. Commuters have endured intolerable delays, dysfunction and disruptions as the MTA has failed to deliver safe and reliable service. News yesterday that the MTA could fail to meet federal requirements to install positive train control, after years of delay, is simply an unacceptable risk for New York commuters. Asking riders to risk injury and waste their time in return for paying even more is not a 'fare' deal.

While the failure to manage the MTA falls to Governor Cuomo, Senator Gillibrand has not been an effective or vocal advocate in Washington. New York sends $48 billion dollars more to Washington then we get back every year. We need those funds back in New York to fix our subways, our roads and our bridges. As Senator, my only ambition will be to serve New Yorkers - and I will bring back funding we desperately need so riders and commuters don’t bear the cost of failed leadership."
