FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 13, 2018
NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- U.S. Senate challenger Chele Farley (R, C, Reform) today criticized incumbent Senator Kirsten Gillibrand for her refusal to take seriously the constitutional obligations related to the confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the US Supreme Court. Farley further called on Gillibrand to meet with Judge Kavanaugh as part of her job as a US Senator, in keeping with her previous meetings with and support for Supreme Court nominees Merrick Garland and Sonia Sotomayor (see below).
Gillibrand opposed the selection of an Associate Justice to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy even before Judge Kavanaugh, or any other nominee, had officially been named. Farley challenged Gillibrand to follow legislative precedent on Supreme Court confirmation hearings as well as adhere to the Senate's Article II duties to "advise and consent" and meet on Capitol Hill with Kavanaugh, a Judge who has served on the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia for the past 12 years. On Monday evening, Gillibrand led a rally with chants of "stand against Kavanaugh" on the steps of the US Supreme Court shortly after President Trump made his selection public.
Said Farley: "Kirsten Gillibrand is Exhibit A in the case against career politicians and Washington dysfunction. Gillibrand won't do her job and give Judge Kavanaugh a full and fair hearing because she's running for President and needs the support of the far-left wing of the Democratic Party. Think about it: A sitting United States Senator has chosen deliberate gridlock for calculated political gain over her Constitutional oath. I call on Senator Gillibrand to do her job and meet with Judge Kavanaugh and stop her political grandstanding that disenfranchises the 19 million New Yorkers she was elected to represent.
"Judge Kavanaugh has impressive academic credentials combined with a record of impartial jurisprudence. As a lawyer, Senator Gillibrand should be well-equipped to discuss judicial philosophy with him before blindly deciding against him to advance her 2020 campaign for President," concluded Farley.
Kirsten Gillibrand on Senate confirmation of Supreme Court nominees:
The Senate has a constitutional obligation to consider the President's #SCOTUS nominees. I urge my colleagues to #DoYourJob.
Pres. Obama has done the right thing by offering up his @SCOTUSnom, now it's the Senate's turn to fulfill our constitutional duty #DoYourJob

I was honored to meet Judge Merrick Garland today. It's clear he is extremely qualified to serve on #SCOTUS & deserves full consideration.
"I think it's our constitutional duty to do our job and vote on this nomination," added Gillibrand, who said she discussed a range of issues with Garland including campaign finance reform, reproductive rights issues and sexual violence issues.
