'We must end the practice of separating children from their parents and end it now'
New York, New York - U.S. Senate candidate Chele Farley (R, C, Reform) is calling on members of Congress to put aside politics and focus efforts to immediately adopt emergency legislation to address the issue of separating immigrant families who cross the border illegally.
Farley supports the Protect Kids and Parents Act which has been introduced by U.S. Senator Ted Cruz. This emergency legislation will keep families intact, create new temporary shelters, fund additional immigration judges, guarantee review by an immigration judge within 72 hours and return those denied asylum to their home countries within 14 days.
“The pictures and stories we hear each day from the southern border are heartbreaking. We must end the practice of separating children from their parents and end it now,” said Farley.
She added, “The current policy of separating families is not in keeping with our values as Americans. Senator Cruz’s bill ensures that families are treated in a humane way by providing the resources to expedite due process and improve holding facilities. As a mother and a concerned New Yorker, I am calling on Senator Gillibrand to support this bipartisan legislation that would solve the problem now,” said Farley.
Farley added, “Senator Gillibrand is calling the situation at the border ‘evil,’ but is she willing to cross party lines to stop it?”
Current federal law requires adults caught crossing the border without using a legal port of entry to be processed for criminal charges, with many children accompanying these adults sent to Health and Human Services facilities. Through the end of May, almost 2,000 children were separated from adults who said they were their parents or guardians.
Farley concluded, “As a mother of three, I understand that families should not be separated and how traumatic that would be for the children. These children have been through enough, through no fault of their own. We need to protect our borders. For too long both parties in Washington have kicked the can down the road -- but in the process we need to remain true to our values. The legislation offered by Senator Cruz solves the immediate crisis and opens the door to further discussions on border immigration issues.
